Jan Kozak Collection: Historical Earthquakes

Thumbnail Image Image-KZ34 Monte Canto mountain near the town of Piuro was being mined for serpentine and was heavily tunnelled. After heavy rains, the side of the mountain collapsed and buried the town, which was never rebuilt. Since the area has no remarkable seismicity, the landslide may not have been caused by an earthquake. Illustrations show area before and after collapse.
