Image-KZ258 German broadside based on eyewitness descriptions: Captain Colhura, arriving in Trieste from Hydra, reported that several horrible earthquakes on 8 consecutive days destroyed this island, that over 500 houses developed cracks or collapsed, because of which some people died and that finally the whole population sought refuge on the ships lying in the harbor. Similar pitiful news had reached it from the outlying (?) islands of the archipelago and the rumor spread that the earth had opened up in Poros, a chasm appeared and that a whole village on the island of Santorini (Thera) suddenly sank into the ground and that there was also considerable damage on the island of Spezia. On the other hand, Captain Lesteri reported that many people from Hydra arrived in Spezia where only 10 to 12 houses had collapsed, but that the ground had burst open in Santorini close to the city and that the part on which the city was located all of a sudden was swallowed up without a trace by the sea with all its inhabitants. |
