Seismic evaluation procedures for pier walls at short bridge overcrossing structures

Report briefly reviews readily available and relevant technical literature relating to the seismic performance of pier wall elements that typify those deployed at short bridge overcrossings (SBOs) in California then uses this review as a basis for recommending certain modifications to CalTrans current procedures for modeling the stiffness properties of the pier walls, for estimating ultimate capacities of pier walls, and for defining pier wall acceptance criteria in the form of allowable demand/capacity ratios.
