Study of Caltrans' seismic evaluation procedures for short bridge overcrossing structures

The study selected five short bridge overcrossings (SBOs) that have been subjected to strong earthquake motions in the past, and whose seismic performance during these earthquakes is well documented (Task 1). Then, the project authors applied Caltrans' current seismic evaluation procedures to each of these SBOs, and compared their predicted seismic performance to their actual performance (Task 2). These comparisons were used together with results from relevant engineering and research studies by others and from extensive analyses conducted under this project, in order to develop recommended modifications to Caltrans' seismic evaluation procedures for SBOs. This work, which was a main focus of the project, was directed toward developing refinements to Caltrans' methods for: (a) evaluating column deformation capacities; (b) modeling of the SBO structure, abutments, and foundations; and (c) estimating the level of modal damping for the design spectra used for seismic analysis of the SBOs (Task 3 ).
