The seismic response of light secondary systems such as internal equipment or piping system in a building is dependent on the response of the primary structural system to the seismic ground motion with the result that very high accelerations can be induced in such secondary systems. The object of this study is to investigate the effect of base isolation on the equipment response through both theoretical and experimental approaches. The experimental program was carried out on the large scale shaking table with a five story steel frame mounted on different kinds of foundation system, namely the fixed base system, the base-isolated system that uses rubber bearings without lead plugs and the base isolated system which uses rubber bearings with a lead plug insert.
