A general method of determining the dynamic response to seismic disturbances of structures when supported on long piles extending through deep sensitive clays is presented. An extensive soil testing program was conducted using undisturbed clay samples taken from the Elkhorn Slough, California site. The testing techniques used to determine the non-linear, hysteretic stress-strain relations, the damping characteristics, and the creep characteristics of the clay are described in considerable detail. The dynamic response of the specific bridge-pile-clay system when subjected to the N-S component of the 1940 El Centro ground acceleration is presented.
