The Loma Prieta Earthquake: An Event Study of Changes in Risk Perceptions and the Housing Market

Harinder Singh & Mark Thayer, Department of Economics, San Diego State University, San Diego, California.
James C. Murdoch, Department of Economics, University of Texas, Dalllas, Texas.

The objective of the research was to assess the impacts of the Loma Prieta earthquake, to measure initial magnitude of effects and propensity to persist into the future. We focused on two impacts: risk perceptions and the housing market. Two types of data, subjective perceptions and actual housing transactions were used. Our research suggests that the earthquake had a measurable impact on perceptions and housing prices. We expect these effects to dissipate in the future. Policy proscriptions are also offered.
