 Pedestrian Bridges

      Pedestrian bridges have always attracted creative engineers.  As traffic loads are small and there is not a large restraint requirement for alignment, they offer more freedom for the designer’s imagination than bridges for heavy traffic and high speed.

      In the following, only some of the interesting pedestrian bridges of Leonhardt, Andrä and Partners are presented.  For further examples, see Slides H36-H37, H57-H58 and H59.

HELICAL STAIRCASE OF THE NECKAR BRIDGE AT ZIEGELHAUSEN
(1953)

  • Helical or winding stairs and ramps affect the aesthetic appearances of bridges.  The most elegant solution is the free-spanning helical stair as first designed for the Neckar Bridge at Ziegelhausen.  The helix has a trapezoidal cross section, thick at the inside face and thin at the outside.  The forces are carried mainly along the small inner circle, where the necessary thickness does not show and the outer thinness gives a light appearance.
  • The top of the helix cantilevers from the bridge pier, and the transition to this fixity could have been made to flow a little more smoothly.  The simple railing with equal vertical steel bars contributes to the lightness.

ROSENSTEIN I AT STUTTGART
(1976-77)

  • Unsymmetric self-anchored suspension bridge with spans of 27.0 and 51.1 meters, built for the Federal Garden Exhibition.
  • Bridge deck of concrete, with width varying from 3.5 to 5.7 meters and depth of only 35 cm.
  • Steel tower with monocell cross section, height 21 meters above bridge deck.
  • Main cable converging at tower, locked coil ropes 75 millimeters in diameter, inclined hangers with twin-strands 16 millimeters in diameter.
