 Introduction

In developing the STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING SLIDE LIBRARY as a comprehensive resource for teaching structural and architectural engineering at college and university level, I felt there was a need to devote a volume to the work of one structural design company.  Leonhardt, Andrä and Partners of Stuttgart, Germany, was an ideal choice for this project.  One of Europe’s leading structural design companies, its staff has been on the leading edge of many developments in engineering over the past 40 years.  Their name has been particularly associated with the development of incrementally launched bridges, cable-stayed bridges, cable-net structures, and prestressed concrete television towers.
Professor Leonhardt generously agreed to provide access to his large collection of photographs, and during a visit to Stuttgart in the summer of 1982, I made a careful study of the material with a view to publishing this work.  Most of the slides in this volume are reproduced (with permission) from that collection; the remainder I took during field trips with members of the design staff.
Mr. Reiner Saul, one of the firm’s senior designers, generously agreed to write the text.  This was a major task involving documenting early as well as recent work of the company, and providing necessary technical information on each of the structures featured.
This volume is unique in that it makes available photographic material that would not otherwise be seen, except possibly at engineering conferences.  It also gives a perspective on the development of the company’s work as seen from inside and in doing so discusses the progression of certain structural systems since the 1940’s.
Those who teach structural and/or architectural engineering will find this publication provides fascinating material for use in the classroom.  I wish to thank Professor Leonhardt and the members of his design staff who generously gave of their time and made the project possible.
