The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveReliability-based design optimization of series structural systemsRoyset, Johannes O.; Der Kiureghian, Armen; Polak, Elijah L. UCB/SEMM-2002/15, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 2002, 163 pages (500/C23/2002/15) Algorithms for solving three classes of reliability-based optimal structural design problems are developed. The first class of problems is to minimize the cost of the design, subject to failure probability and structural constraints. The 2nd class is to minimize the failure probability of the design, subject to cost and structural constraints. The failure probabilities can describe component failures or series structural system failures. The 3rd class of problems is further extended to the optimal design of a portfolio of structures.
