The Marina District of San Francisco was especially hard hit by the magnitude 7.1 Loma Prieta earthquake of Oct. 17, 1989. This report has been prepared in response to a request from the City of San Francisco to the Univ. of California at Berkeley that a study be made of the conditions in the Marina District that were responsible for this heavy damage, with recommendations for actions that may be taken by the city, property owners, and residents to ensure public safety and minimize damage in future earthquakes.
