A Symposium in Honor of Vitelmo Bertero, highlighting his distinguished career and engineering achievements, was held January 30-February 1, 1997, in Berkeley, California. Professor Bertero is professor emeritus of civil engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and a former director of EERC. More than 250 fellow engineers and colleagues and former students attended the symposium. Thirty-seven symposium papers are included in this report. These papers focus on many of Professor Bertero's areas of interest: reinforced concrete structures, structural steel, design methodologies, dynamic structural analysis, lessons learned from earthquakes, and improving seismic building codes.
