A criterion for failure of plain concrete subjected to combined stresses was established from tests of 65 tubular specimens tested to failure under various combinations of shearing and compressive stress. A procedure for determining the shearing strength of rectangular reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement was developed. Excellent correlation was obtained between calculated and observed shearing strength of a limited group of beams for which the mechanism of failure had been defined by other investigators.
