Stresses in a number of configurations of a grout gallery to be embedded at the base of the Oroville Dam are analyzed by the method of finite elements. The mathematical basis of the method is described and the essential equations governing the deformations of the individual elements are derived. This report is one of the earliest applications of the finite element methods to structural engineering works at the University of California, Berkeley.
