Constitutive equations are developed for elastic solids sustaining deformation for which displacement gradients are small but where complete physical nonlinearity is permitted. The constitutive equation includes as special cases forms considered by recent authors; at the same time, more general effects are considered, in particular, coupling between volumetric and deviatoric effects. Some simple states of deformation are examined and the plane elastostatic problem is formulated together with the approximate solution of an example by perturbation techniques.
