The work presents a systematic development in the field equations for various types of rods and plates of interest in applications within the framework of general non-linear elastostaics including the appearance of bifurcation phenomena. Approximate kinematic assumptions in plate theory based upon projection method of Kantorovich and the use of Taylor's consistent linearization procedure are employed. Emphasis is placed on the consideration of the effect of shear deformation asnd subsequent transversal warping in the non-linear theories of straight rods and plates.
