This paper is concerned with a one-dimensional finite strain beam theory which generalizes to the fully three dimensional dynamic situation the formulation originally developed by Reissner for the plane static problem by constraining the general three-dimensional theory with the introduction of a kinematic assumption. The crucial step in the formulation is the particular parametrization chosen which results from the kinematic description of the beam in terms of a moving orthogonal frame.
