The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveMechanisms of Alkali-Aggregate ReactionPrezzi, Monica; Fontoura, Jose Thomas F.; Bittencourt, Rubens M.; Monteiro, Paulo J. M. UCB/SEMM-1995/02, Dept. of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1995-05, 117 pages (500 C23 95-02) One of the aims of this research was to investigate the expansive behavior of different mortar mixtures containing a reactive aggregate (microcrystallline quartzite). The first stage in the research was to analyze a comprehensive experimental study on the alkali-aggregate reaction and to propose a theoretical model to explain the expansion phenomena. A theoretical model is proposed to explain the volume change behavior of the reaction product gels formed in concrete containing a reactive aggregate.
