The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveThermal Expansion of Heterogeneous Materials With Application to Low Temperature EnvironmentsNadeau, Joseph C.; Ferrari, Mauro UCB/SEMM-1995/08, Dept. of Civil Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1995-08, 21 p. (500 C23 95-08) Equivalent expressions for the effective thermal expansion of an heterogeneous material or composite have been developed in terms of stress and strain concentrators. The effects of temperature dependence of the elastic properties and of an initial eigenstrain field are included. For special classes of bi-constituent materials, the effective thermal expansion has been presented in terms of the effective elastic properties of the material, thus removing the explicit dependence on the concentrators.
