The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveEarthquake analysis and response of concrete gravity dams including base slidingChavez, Juan W.; Fenves, Gregory L. UCB/EERC-93/07, Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of California, Berkeley, 1993-12, 190 pages (635/F45/1994) The stability of a concrete gravity dam against sliding along the interface between the dam base and the foundation rock must be assured in a seismic safety evaluation. For this type of evaluation, a new numerical method is used to compute the earthquake response of gravity dams, including base sliding. The hybrid frequency-time domain procedure accounts for the nonlinear base sliding behavior of the dam and the frequency-dependent response of the impounded water and flexible foundation rock.
