The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveLiquefaction behavior of saturated sands under uni-directional and bi-directional monotonic and cyclic simple shear loadingBoulanger, Ross W.; Seed, Raymond B.; Chan, Clarence K.; Seed, H. Bolton; Sousa, Jorge UCB/GT-91-08, University of California, Berkeley, Geotechnical Engineering, 1991-08, PDF (260 MB) In order to extrapolate SPT-based (and CPT-based) liquefaction evaluation methodologies to sloping ground conditions, laboratory studies which only modeled "transverse" dynamic loading conditions for a slope and did not consider the influence of the orthogonal (longitudinal) dynamic loading produced by bi-directional earthquake shear waves, have been used. This report details research with a new U.C. Berkeley Bi-Directional Simple Shear Apparatus to model dynamic loading conditions within a slope or earth embankment subjected to both "transverse" and "longitudinal" cyclic earthquake motions.
