Underground bulk storage of hydrogen in mined caverns

The state of knowledge for the potential storage of hydrogen underground in excavated caverns, as a pressurized gas or as a cryogenic liquid is reviewed in this feasibility study. Such installations specific to hydrogen have not been constructed to date although pressurized hydrogen gas has been stored in a gas field and in solution cavern in salt. Pertinent experience and information gained from cavern storage of gases other than hydrogen is documented.
