Laboratory testing is described to gain insight into the mechanisms of wellbore breakout formation through a series of tests in which breakouts would be formed under controlled stress conditions. The work was performed using gypsum cements and breakouts were formed around boreholes in cylindrical samples which were loaded hydrostatically, and rectangular prisms which were loaded non-hydrostatically.
