A Simple statistical approach to differential settlements on clay

A simple approach to calculation of the degree of uncertainty (expected range of values) in areal settlements of fills over clays is proposed and applied to a reclaimed site on the east shore of San Francisco Bay. Calculated ranges of settlement are compared to actual observations at each site. The problem of calculating uncertainty in differential settlement for the case of variable clay thicknesses and variable loading is examined a a solution method proposed.
