Two-dimensional physical model tests were used to investigate factors controlling the movement of lighter than water organic liquids through the vadose zone toward the water table. The physical model tests were designed with the aim of clarifying the effects of grain size, heterogeneities and water table fluctuations, and to provide pressure and saturation measurements suitable for quantitative analysis of the process.
