The influence of deep, stiff deposits of Old Bay Clay (clay soils of the San Antonio and Alameda Formations) on seismic site response is investigated by (1) characterization of the ground motions recorded at Oakland area sites in terms of magnitude, duration and frequency content, (2) back-analysis of the seismic site response at three Oakland area sites using one-dimensional equivalent-linear and fully nonlinear dynamic analytical procedures, and (3) prediction of the seismic site response at these sites during three scenario earthquakes.
