Seismic response of light internal equipment in base isolated structures

A theoretical analysis and a parallel experimental program are presented which demonstrate that base isolation not only attenuates the response of the primary structural system but also reduces the response of light secondary systems. The advantages and disadvantages of base isolation systems are discussed, including isolation systems with linear elastic bearings and systems using lead-rubber hysteretic bearings.
