The seismic response of 3 reinforced masonry buildings (2 with instrumentation, and one without) with flexible diaphragms is investigated. The response of an instrumented 2-story building during the Loma Prieta (1989) earthquake and the response of an instrumented 3-story building during the Whittier Narrows (1987), Landers (1992), and Northridge (1994), California, earthquakes, are presented. Flexibility of the diaphragms of the instrumented buildings was also studied using 1997 UBC criteria. A one-story building lacking instrumentation was modeled using ETABS (version 7).
