The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchivePerformance models for flexural damage in reinforced concrete columnsBerry, Michael P.; Eberhard, Marc O. PEER-2003/18, Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of California, Berkeley, 2003, 156 pages (400/P33/2003-18) Damage development in reinforced concrete columns is complex, involving 3-dimensional material and geometrical nonlinearities in the concrete and reinforcing steel, as well as the interaction between the expansion of the concrete core and the restraint provided by the transverse reinforcement. To develop recommendations that can be implemented easily in practice, this research relied on moment-curvature analysis and plastic-hinge analysis to predict trends in concrete compressive strain, plastic rotation, drift ratio, and displacement ductility at the onset of damage.
