The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveFluid-structure interactions: added mass computations for incompressible fluidKuo, James Shaw-Han UCB/EERC-82/09, Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of California, Berkeley, 1982-08, 126 pages (540/K86/1982) In this report, dam-reservoir interaction effects considering incompressible fluid are presented. The hydrodynamic effect represented by an added-mass matrix, is evaluated by means of two basically different procedures--a generalized Westergaard formula and the Galerkin finite element method. Pressure solutions acting on gravity dams, cylindrical arch dams, and general arch dams are compared for different procedures. Rigorous mode shape and frequency correlations are carried out; and, based on the results of the correlation studies, a most efficient procedure is suggested, which is shown to be adequate for engineering purposes.
