The Earthquake Engineering Online ArchiveControl of seismic response of piping systems and other structures by base isolationKelly, James M. UCB/EERC-81/01, Earthquake Engineering Research Center, University of California, Berkeley, 1981-01, 90 pages (530/K38/1981C) This report contains four papers on aseismic base isolation in power plants and other structures which were presented at the Emerging Technology Conferences (CENTURY 2). The following aspects of base isolation are considered: (1) the historic development of base isolation, (2) design of multilayered rubber bearings, (3) performance of flexibly mounted equipment, and (4) the Alexisismon isolation system, comprising connecting elements composed of horizontally positioned steel bars whose middle sections rupture during a severe earthquake, and supporting elements of elastomeric bearings combined with pot bearings.
