Restraining the giant catfish
Provided by Jack Moehle.
In Japanese folklore, it is a giant catfish (namazu) living under the islands that causes earthquakes. There is an entire genre of paintings and woodblock prints devoted to the subject (namazu-e). This image include two gigantic catfish, as well as a famous Kabuki actor and the god of fire (Fudo Myo-O)
