Description: The building's superstructure is separated (isolated) from its foundation by a mechanism that allows the ground to move relative to the building. The design allows the weight of the building itself to provide inertia and damping, so that the seismic energy is dissipated rather than absorbed by the structure. Shown is an isolation bearing at the bottom of a column under construction. The Terminal is the largest base-isolated building in the world. Designed by Skidmore, Owings, Merrill.
